A common question about PRP is about how often does a patient need
to come back for additional PRP treatments? Well this depends on which clinic you ask. Many clinics recommend a 2 month loading phase in the beginning before commencing an ongoing and consistent frequency in the long term. As an example, this can mean receiving 2 to 4 PRP treatments within the first 2 months and then coming back every 3 to 4 months for additional treatment to maintain or improve your existing results.
From our experience, the recommended frequency of on going treatment is heavily dependent on the blood volume extracted per session by the relevant clinic. Basically the more blood that is taken out, the less often PRP is recommended or required for hair loss treatment.
There appears to be an unofficial “60mls per year” guideline rule that is unknowingly followed by many clinics. This means the following:
5mls per PRP treatment = One PRP session per month (12 per year)
10mls per treatment = Once every 2 months (6 per year)
15mls per treatment = Once every 3 months (4 per year)
20mls per treatment = Once every 4 months (3 per year)
30mls per treatment = Once every 6 months (2 per year)
60mls or more = Once every 11 to 12 months (1 per year)
Notice that in each of the above examples the patient is receiving 60mls of extracted blood per year. It is possible that all of these blood volume and frequency combinations may deliver similar results. Quite possibly, although from our experience, PRP sessions where less than 30mls of blood is extracted do not produce the same results when compared to taking 30mls or 60mls within the one sitting.
Let’s presume that all the listed PRP frequency com binations work equally as well, the question to ask yourself is which ongoing frequency would you most prefer to follow? Would you like to come in 3 times per year to receive PRP treatment? 6 times per year? Or perhaps 1 or 2 times per year?
At Newin Institute we take between 60mls and 120mls of blood per PRP treatment when treating a whole thinning top. For this reason most of our satisfied clients maintain their results with 1 session of PRP injections per year.
